The New York Yankees signed reliever Adam Ottavino last week, but the story within this story is not a New York born pitcher coming home or why MLB continues to invest heavily in relief pitching. No, the story is about what Ottavino said about Babe Ruth last month.
Yes, that statement.
Well, you can imagine the reaction. It was funny. It was irreverent. It was angry. Depending on which social account you were reading, you’d think Ottavino had just offended someone’s family member.

“I’d strike out Babe Ruth every time” – #AdamOttavino He would, the game is completely different today. Babe Ruth never saw sliders nasty as Adam’s. People take offense, newspapers need… https://t.co/a2vpJNbYEt

For Yankees fans — and baseball purists, in general — Ruth vs. Ottavino is a fun baseball debate, but don’t let it cloud the fact that the former Rockies closer is one of the top bullpen arms in the game. The first time he snaps off one of those filthy sliders and buckles Mookie Betts’ knees we will all quickly move past debates and get on with the baseball season.
